The verdict

Would we buy again?

YES — AT FULL PRICE

The pen is the cheapest thing on this list, and I still think about it more than the camera. That's the quiet flex.

Muji's 0.38mm gel refill has been the favourite of design school TAs for years, and after twelve weeks of pushing one through two moleskines, I understand why: it writes like it's slightly in love with the paper. No skipping, no bleed (on decent stock), and a line that feels drafted rather than scribbled.

Buy a ten-pack. They're cheaper than a latte and last six months. Stop buying $3 Bic replacements that die in a week.

What worked
  • Glides without skipping on cheap paper
  • Ink dries fast — no smudges for lefties
  • Refills are absurdly cheap in Japan-import packs
What didn't
  • The caps crack if you chew on them (don't ask)
  • Bleeds through sub-80gsm paper
