Would we buy again?
YES — AT FULL PRICE
We had issues with the XM5. Sony heard us. The XM6 fixes the non-folding hinge, keeps the obscenely good ANC, and adds genuine LDAC+ support that actually makes a difference over a DAC.
Kenji tried to AB them against the AirPods Max (USB-C) and the Bose QC Ultra. The Sony takes it on both ANC and sound stage. Only the Apple wins on comfort — but the Apple also weighs twice as much.
Our default recommendation for anyone asking 'what over-ears should I buy' — and it has been since the XM3. The XM6 earns the seat.
What worked
- ANC is the best on the market — genuinely quieter than XM5
- 30-hour battery with ANC on
- Finally foldable again — the XM5 decision was wrong, Sony reversed it
What didn't
- Touch controls are still finicky in gloves
- Call quality is good-not-great — fine for Zoom, weak on NYC subway
