The verdict

Would we buy again?

YES — AT FULL PRICE

The Houdini is the jacket we'll give our kids — not because it's heirloom, but because it's the one piece of outdoor gear we always have in a bag. 5oz. Packs into its own pocket the size of a sandwich.

Kenji has worn one through three Tokyo rainy seasons, two Brooklyn Aprils, and a surprise storm in Banff. It is not a technical shell — the Arc'teryx Zeta SL does that better for $350. But for 'in case the weather turns' at $119, nothing touches it.

The other rec: buy in a color you'd actually wear over a sweater. The safety orange is the cliché.

What worked
  • Packs into its chest pocket — fits in any jacket or day-bag
  • Water-resistant enough for a 20-minute surprise rain
  • 100% recycled nylon, bluesign-approved
What didn't
  • Not a real raincoat. Real downpour, you're getting wet.
  • Cuffs aren't adjustable — wind gets in
